Budget agency projects slow growth,

high joblessness

Aug-24-2011--WASHINGTON – The economy will grow by less than 3% through 2012, and unemployment will remain above 8% until 2014, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office projects.

In its semiannual update of budget and economic data, the agency — which serves as the official scorekeeper for President Obama and Congress — projects painfully slow progress on the economic front through next year's election and beyond.

Economic growth will remain slow but steady, it says, increasing by 2.3% this year and 2.7% next year.

The budget deficit this year will remain at about $1.3 trillion, the report says, marking the third straight year of $1 trillion-plus deficits. That's 8.5% of the nation's economy.

Budget agency projects slow growth,

East Coast earthquake's epicenter

near a nuclear plant

Aug-23-2011--The magnitude 5.8 earthquake that shook the East Coast on Tuesday was centered near a nuclear power plant, raising concerns that the facility could have been damaged.

North Anna Power Station, located about 10 miles from the epicenter, is running its safety systems on backup generators after the quake knocked out the plant’s outside power source.

David McIntyre, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said the two reactors at the plant stopped generating power automatically after the quake.
An NRC resident inspector has been working with power company officials to inspect the facility and its complex systems for any cracks or other damage. So far, he said no damage had been found.

5.9 magnitude quake rocks East Coast

Aug-23-2011--A 5.9 magnitude quake center in Virginia rocks the East Coast, with tremors felt as far south as North Carolina, as far north as Buffalo and Boston, and as far west as Detroit.

The Washington Post quotes a a USGS official as saying,

"We would certainly expect aftershocks."

The USGS suggests that the quake is the largest to originate in Virginia since May 31, 1897.

The USGS says the quake was centered at a depth of 4.6 miles.

In "the East Coast you have this old hard, cold crust that does a lovely job of transmitting the waves," says Lucy Jones, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

"This large of an earthquake …. could definitely have been felt hundreds of miles away."
