Tornadoes and storms rip through South,
at least 284 dead
April-28-2011--The aftermath of overnight tornadoes show destroyed homes and vehicles in Pratt City, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, Tornadoes and violent storms ripped through seven southern states, killing at least 284 people in the country's deadliest series of twisters in nearly four decades.
The clusters of powerful tornadoes -- more than 160 reported in total -- combined with storms to cut a swath of destruction heading west to east over several days. In some areas, whole neighborhoods were flattened, cars flipped over and trees and power lines felled, leaving tangled wreckage.

A New Era: Fed Chairman Press Conferences

Ben Bernanke »

Bernanke Avoids Gaffes at Debut News Conference, Regrets Rogoff Chess Game

April-27-2011-- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke avoided saying anything yesterday at his first press conference that shocked or confused investors.

Bernanke commented on a broad spectrum of economic issues, saying he expected inflation in fuel costs to slow and the end of the central bank’s $600 billion bond purchase program in June to have little impact on markets. He tried to show compassion for the average American, saying the Fed has pursued record stimulus to help people facing long-term unemployment and that higher gasoline prices are

“absolutely creating a great deal of financial hardship for a lot of people.”

Bernanke Briefings to Address Transparency

Ben Bernanke:

Chairman to choose his words with care

April-26-2011-- WASHINGTON - When Ben Bernanke makes history today as the first Federal Reserve chief to begin a series of regular news conferences, his tasks will be simple.

The historic news conference, the first of three this year, is part of a long-standing Bernanke campaign to make the central bank more transparent and publicly accessible.

The Fed is expected to say that its benchmark rate will remain near zero and that its $600 billion Treasury bond-buying program will end in June as planned.

The bond-buying program was intended to encourage spending and boost growth.

But critics say it's raised the risk of high inflation.
