Bernanke Says Accommodative Policy Needed for
'Uneven' Economic Recovery

June-07-2011--Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank should maintain record monetary stimulus to boost an “uneven” and “frustratingly slow” economic recovery. “The economy is still producing at levels well below its potential; consequently, accommodative monetary policies are still needed,” Bernanke, 57, said today in a speech to a conference in Atlanta. “Until we see a sustained period of stronger job creation, we cannot consider the recovery to be truly established.” Recent data showing weakness in the economy, including a rise in the unemployment rate to 9.1 percent in May, has increased the odds the Fed will hold the benchmark interest rate near zero into next year. At the same time, Bernanke and his fellow policy makers plan this month to complete a $600 billion bond purchase program,

Wildfire becomes 2nd largest in Ariz. history
June-07-2011--SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz.—A ferocious wildfire that has driven thousands from their homes in eastern Arizona grew to 486 square miles Tuesday and set its sights on the biggest target yet—two of the most populous towns in the fire-scarred mountains. Joe Reinarz, commander of the Type I team battling the Wallow Fire, briefs several hundreds residents during a public meeting in Eagar, Ariz.

Employers Added 54K Jobs, Rate Ticks Up to 9.1 -June-03-2011-

Bleak Jobs Report Dampens Hopes of Steady Growth

June-03-2011--A bleak jobs report suggests the recovery from the Great Recession will be longer and bumpier than many economists had envisioned.

Most economists say job growth should strengthen later this year as gasoline prices drop further and the economy recovers from the effects of natural disasters in the U.S. and abroad. But the recovery is starting to weaken 17 months before the 2012 election, which could hurt President Barack Obama's re-election

prospects. Several chronic problems are weighing on the economy. Home prices are still falling. The average worker's pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Cutbacks in spending by state and local governments are contributing to slower growth, even in the private sector.

And members of Congress are preparing to cut spending.

Tornado winds topped 135 miles per hour, weather service says -June-03-2011--

Tornado winds topped 135 miles per hour, weather service says
June-03-2011--The tornado that raced through western Massachusetts on Wednesday was at least a category EF3, meteorologists concluded today. “It is possible it could end up being ranked higher. But at this time, we feel comfortable releasing the information,”
“It was at least an EF3 in the hardest hit areas along its track, which certainly includes Monson.”
An EF3 is considered a strong tornado carrying winds of 136-165 miles per hour that can cause significant damage to structures and destroy those that are not well-built.
Tornado survivors are being asked to call 211 today and give the state a general report on the damage they have suffered so officials can prod the Obama administration into qualifying Western and Central Massachusetts for federal disaster relief.

Obama: Still Battling Economic 'Headwinds'

Obama tours Chrysler plant, touts auto bailout

June-03-2011--WASHINGTON -- President Obama touted the recovery of the Big Three automakers in a speech at a Chrysler plant in Toledo, Ohio, on Friday, saying it couldn't have happened without his 2009 bailouts. At a Chrysler plant that makes Jeep Wranglers, the president talked about the jobs saved in Toledo, as an example of the broader economic recovery. "Each day, when you clock in, you're doing more than earning your pay by churning out cars, you're standing up for this company. . . and showing the world that American manufacturing and American industry is back," Obama said.

"In The War On Terror There Is No Country More Important Than Yemen!"

Violence erupts in Yemen cities
after cease-fire fails
May-31-2011--Heavy fighting erupts in Sana between Yemeni government forces and backers of a tribal rival to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and security forces fire on protesters in Taiz, adding to the death toll.
Yemen's capital and other cities again erupted into violent chaos Tuesday after a cease-fire collapsed between forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and tribal fighters, who seized at least four government buildings.
The heavy fighting in Sana began late Monday evening as Saleh's Republican Guard troops and supporters of his rival tribal chief Sadiq Ahmar pounded each other in fresh clashes. Mortar-shell explosions and gunfire ripped the air early Tuesday.

Experts say cellphones are possibly carcinogenic May-31-2011--

Experts say cellphones are possibly carcinogenic
May-31-2011-- An international panel of experts says cellphones are possibly carcinogenic to humans after reviewing details from dozens of published studies on the matter.
The statement was issued in Lyon, France, Tuesday by the International Agency for Research on Cancer - the cancer agency of the World Health Organization. The assessment by the cancer panel now goes to WHO and national health agencies for possible guidance on cellphone use.
Industry disputes report on cell phone cancer link Last year, results of a large study found no clear link between cellphones and cancer. But some advocacy groups contend the study raised serious concerns because it showed a hint of a possible link between very heavy phone use and a rare but often deadly form of brain tumor.
