Obama:
Immigration plan is an
'economic imperative'
May-10-2011--President Obama went to the Texas-Mexico border today to stump for his version of
"comprehensive immigration reform." Speaking in El Paso, Obama again argued that ongoing improvements to tighten the border should be accompanied by a pathway to citizenship for the
11 million or so illegal immigrants in the USA.
"One way to strengthen the middle class in America is to reform the immigration system, so that there is no longer a massive underground economy that exploits a cheap source of labor while depressing wages for everybody else," Obama said. "Immigration reform is an economic imperative."
Obama toured the Bridge of the Americas transit facility, the nation's largest in terms of passenger and commercial traffic.
In his remarks later, Obama said,
"We define ourselves as a nation of immigrants."
