U.S., China reach 'milestone'

agreement on security, economic policy

May-10-2011--The United States and China on Tuesday pledged to deepen their cooperation on economic and military matters, setting aside a year of tension over issues such as arms sales to Taiwan and the value of China's currency with what officials referred to as a “milestone” agreement.

Ending two days of high-level talks in Washington, the two sides agreed that their top military leaders would meet regularly in what has been dubbed the “Strategic Security Dialogue.

“healthy recognition” by Chinese officials that they need to open more aspects of their economy to outside investment if they are to sustain the high rates of growth needed to continue improving living standards for their 1.4 billion people.”Video: Charlie Rose - Timothy Geithner & Wang Qishan 05/09/11

Keiser Report: Economic Euthanasia (E145)

Gold, silver rise again on debt,

inflation concerns

May-10-2011--NEW YORK - Gold and silver prices rose for a third straight session on Tuesday after last week's sell-off, boosted by intense fighting in Libya, uncertainty about debt-laden Greece and the rising cost of oil and grain. Concerns over a European debt crisis after conflicting reports on a potential aid deal for Greece and similar problems elsewhere in the euro zone underpinned prices, as did gains in crude oil on concerns that U.S. flooding could hit refineries.

Precious metals rose amid sharply higher commodity prices across the board as the sector continued to recoup last week's near-record losses.

Silver and gold rally again as buyers return

Obama Urges Immigration Reform

Immigration reform »

Obama:

Immigration plan is an

'economic imperative'

May-10-2011--President Obama went to the Texas-Mexico border today to stump for his version of

"comprehensive immigration reform." Speaking in El Paso, Obama again argued that ongoing improvements to tighten the border should be accompanied by a pathway to citizenship for the

11 million or so illegal immigrants in the USA.

"One way to strengthen the middle class in America is to reform the immigration system, so that there is no longer a massive underground economy that exploits a cheap source of labor while depressing wages for everybody else," Obama said. "Immigration reform is an economic imperative."

Obama toured the Bridge of the Americas transit facility, the nation's largest in terms of passenger and commercial traffic.

In his remarks later, Obama said,

"We define ourselves as a nation of immigrants."

Mississippi River rises close to record levels

Memphis, Tennessee »

Crude Oil Rises to Four-Day High on Mississippi Floods, Rally in Equities

May-10-2011--Crude oil rose to a four-day high as concern increased that flooding of the Mississippi River will disrupt fuel output and as equities climbed.

Futures advanced 1.3 percent as the flood moved south from Memphis, threatening refineries and shipping traffic before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico in about two weeks.

Stocks strengthened as companies raised earnings forecasts, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index up for a third day. “The flood is impacting supply and will continue to put upward pressure on prices,”
