Days Before Presidential Election, Russian TV Reports a Weeks-Old Plot to Kill Putin
Feb-27-2012--MOSCOW - Russian television reported on Monday that the Ukrainian and Russian intelligence services had worked together over many weeks to thwart an assassination attempt on the Russian prime minister, Vladimir V. Putin.  “This is a sign that the real leaders of Mr. Putin’s political structure, the people from the Federal Security Service, are trying to mobilize public opinion according to the logic that we are surrounded by enemies and that we have one decisive, effective and intelligent national leader that they want to destroy,” “The timely disclosure of this conspiracy against this leader is a serious addition to the electoral rating of the potential president.”

Feb-27-2012--The blue-chip index flirts with the psychologically important milestone for fifth straight session only to fall short again. A board on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange shows the closing number for the Dow Jones Industrial average. The Dow Jones industrial average Tuesday will make its sixth attempt to cross the 13,000 milestone.
The blue-chip index has flirted with the psychologically important level for five straight sessions, only to fall short each time. Late-day selling Monday undercut what would have been the stock market's latest milestone in its recovery from the 2008 financial crisis.

A Crucial Test for Romney
Feb-27-2012 --DETROIT-Michigan's Republican presidential primary Tuesday is more than a test of Mitt Romney's ability to win his native state. It's a test of a central thesis of his campaign: He has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama.  A Romney spokesman blasted that approach. "Rick Santorum has moved beyond just 'taking one for the team.' He is now willing to wear the other team's jersey if he thinks it will get him more votes," said spokesman Ryan Williams.

Fears Expressed Over GOP Candidates
Feb-27-2012--Republican leaders and voters are becoming concerned that the extended GOP presidential primary is weakening the party's candidates by accentuating positions that will make it harder to win the bigger battle against President Barack Obama. The fear has surfaced in Michigan, where many conservatives question the wisdom of Mitt Romney's repeated attacks on the auto unions in a state where more than a third of all voters live in a union household. 

Syrian activists: 
64 bodies found near Homs in one of the worst mass killings
Feb-27-2012--BEIRUT -The bodies of dozens of men were found dumped on wasteland on the outskirts of the stricken city of Homs on Monday in what appeared to be one of the worst instances of mass killing since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began last March.
The Local Coordination Committees, an opposition group, said that the bodies of 64 men were taken to the National Hospital in Homs and that an unknown number of women and children who had been with them are missing. Activists said they believed that the men had been trying to flee the violence with their families when they were stopped and gunned .

Bodies of slain US officers return home

Feb-27-2012--Dover, Delaware -Troops in white gloves and camouflage carried a pair of flag-draped caskets off an Air Force transport Monday as the bodies of two senior US military officers killed inside Afghanistan's interior ministry arrived home.
Air Force Lt. Col. John Loftis and Army Maj. Robert Marchanti II were gunned down Friday when an Afghan intelligence officer turned his gun on them inside the ministry, Loftis and Marchanti were killed in a spasm of violence that followed the burning of copies of the Quran, the Islamic holy book, in what U.S. President Barack Obama has called an accident.

S&P Declares Greece in Default
Feb-27-2012--Greece became the first euro-zone member officially to be rated in default, 13 years after the single European currency was adopted to strengthen the European Union. 
Standard & Poor's cut Greece's long-term credit rating to selective default from double-C. The move was expected, as S&P said this month that it would consider Greece in default if it added "collective-action" clauses to its sovereign debt, effectively forcing all bondholders to accept a bond-swap offering. Greece's Parliament approved that measure last week.
